Imagining the unknown

a solo exhibition by

Annamieke Engelbrecht

ANNAMIEKE ENGELBRECHT (b. 1995) lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.

She primarily work with oil paints and sculpture. Her new exhibition, titled “Imagining the unknown”, is fuelled by a desire to compare internet culture and modern technology with the cosmic expanse, and to explore its impact on our way of life.

“I present this human self-obsession as a collision with the vast expanse of space - an explosion of abstract chaos.

My fascination with the cosmos was ignited as I observed my peers on social media embarking on traditional milestones - marriages, house purchases and parenthood – a script typical of an adult’s. Contemplating my own life at 28, I found myself deviating from these expected paths, rendering me an extraterrestrial presence on Earth, attempting to conform to human norms yet feeling distinctly out of sync.”
