GAVIN RAIN DELVES DEEPER

Those familiar with Gavin Rain’s work know that he explores the dark space between the information areas (in other words, the space between the pixels).

Some call his work neo-pointillism, others pixelism.

When he started with this style of painting, his paintings featured paint applied in dots of different sizes. This then moved towards a stronger reliance on texture of these dots and eventually on to include the use of texture between the layered dots.

Recently he has been pushing these boundaries and experimented with this knowledge gained. While his work continues to explore the concept of “the spaces between”, he has used a more fluid method of paint application and succeeded in producing works equally as mysterious that feel familiar yet look very different. An added bonus is the opportunity it provided him to show his talent for composition, something he could not do with the portrait studies.

The new series features images of city streets bustling with activity where paint is applied in thick sensual layers and the result is rich and colourful. As with the previous works, the result remains an image that relies on closer inspection to understand it completely.

These and previous works are currently on display at the Worldart gallery in Cape Town.
