WAYS OF SEEING BY CLAUDE CHANDLER

Claude Chandler’s second solo exhibition opens at the Worldart gallery in Cape Town on Thursday 4 August.

His painting style is often referred to as urban-pop and involves using stamps to create portraits that resemble faces assembled by binary code.

This exhibition will feature new paintings presented with the title “Ways of seeing”.
“The way we see each other today is mostly via the virtual world. Portraits have now become brands. How does this influence the way we see each other?
Also, there are many different synonyms for the word ‘see’. Every synonym refers to a slightly different, nuanced way of seeing. ‘Look,’ ‘glance,’ ‘stare,’ ‘glare’ and ‘gaze’ are all ways of seeing, but each pertains to a completely different set of situations, emotions and interactions. In my new body of work, I used these words to create paintings that describe ways of seeing.” says Chandler.

Chandler sold his entire exhibition within four days last year and did so again at the Turbine Art Fair in Johannesburg recently.

Claude Chandler was born in 1989 in Durban and obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Durban University of Technology in 2012.

In the 2008 he participated in The Nivea Art Awards and in 2010 the Sasol New Signatures National Art Competition and was a finalist in both of these competitions. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the SPI Portrait Award.
