The word sculpture has its roots in the act of scratching, carving, cutting and engraving. Taking this as a starting point, Notes on Sculpture brings together 28 Cape Town-based artists whose practices explore what sculpture can be, how it comes into being, and how it occupies space.
Many of the artists in the exhibition work across different media. In curating the show, the focus has been on materiality, texture, form and space. Certain rooms in the gallery take on the character of installations, becoming material environments that echo aspects of the outside world.
